UNUSUAL AMERICAN ELEPHANT WEATHERVANE

A charming early 20th Folk Art Elephant Weathervane that was originally found in Connecticut. Hand crafted in a swell form which is molded with sheet copper. This is a unusual subject for a weathervane.

A Elephant Weathervane attributed to Jewell & Co. was commissioned in 1866. In 1870’s Cushing & Co. purchased Jewell’s molds & designs.

One can only speculate, that based in Bridgeport – Connecticut, P.T. Barnum Circus was the makers inspiration. Therefore, with uninhibited freedom the weathervane of the famous “Jumbo the Elephant” a popular performing circus animal was created.

The Elephant weathervane is a interpretation which is sensational & innovative not following any traditional design. It has a broad emphasis on abstract design with a sense of humor, rather than visual realism .The weathervane is naive and modern, a exemplary Folk Art Weathervane for anyone’s collection.
