SCARCE GATELEG DINING TABLE
Found in New York State
A precise place of origin has not been determined for this large Pilgrim Century gateleg dining table. This table is a rural craftsman’s interpretation of an urban model with its simplified turnings, butt joints and heavy square stretchers. Its open stretcher base with turned members supporting the top… illustrates the vertical proportions in furniture that became pronounced after 1700. The table is aesthetically appealing with its contrasts of plain board surfaces against its architecturally baluster turned legs. After 300 plus years, this Scarce Pilgrim Century Cherry Gateleg Table stands with a untouched old surface on its base.
