CHIPPENDALE TILT TOP TEA TABLE
Salem, Massachusetts
Circa 1780 – 1790

This large serpentine-edged “square” top tea table probably lent itself to many purposes. A fine figured mahogany one board top has its sides edged with ogee molding. Its top can be brought vertical when not in use to save space. The pillar on urn pedestal was a standard design of coastal Massachusetts. Its angular, upright appearance of the cabrioles is typical of tripod design of the 18th century. They terminate to claw and ball feet with carving having definite claws having the side toes curve backwards, all gently clasping a elongated ball. To conclude, with the table’s fine condition it expresses a radiant, elegant feeling true to Salem School Cabinet work.
