CHIPPENDALE SIDE CHAIR
Boston, Massachusetts
Circa 1750-1780

This is a transitional side chair, in the intermediate periods of Queen Anne and Chippendale. The chair features a shaped crest rail with molded, out-swept ears centered with a carved foliate against a punched star ground. This is above a pierced vase form splat (owl eye splat) with lightly carved volutes terminating downward to a molded trapezoidal seat frame, a shaped front skirt all supported on cabriole front legs that terminate to double pad feet. The distinctive details of this chair are distinctly different from other New England chairs which they most nearly resemble. Estate found in very good condition this is a Fine Massachusetts Side Chair.

Old refinished (possibly original) surface with warm color.
