ELIPHALET CHAPIN CHIPPENDALE SIDE CHAIR
East Windsor, Connecticut
Circa 1760-1780

This side chair is typical of the work of Connecticut cabinetmaker Eliphalet Chapin (1741-1807). It has a pierced gothic splat and an undulating crest rail with a rounded, roll-back treatment of its central arched section. The sweep of line of the Gothic arches into the crest rail creates a more unified and animated design.

Eliphalet Chapin, was a Connecticut native who is known to have served his apprenticeship in Philadelphia. The pattern of the back splat of this Connecticut chair and that of chairs made in Philadelphia have a great deal in common. The chairs follow the Philadelphia practices closely and the similarity of design and the use of through tenons is in the same manner.

The chairs “untouched” cherry surface and original white pine slip seat frames gives additional pleasure to its form. It is our pleasure to be able to offer this Fine Chair in
its undisturbed period condition.

No restorations.
