FALL FRONT DESK
Attributed to DUNCAN PHYFE or one of his Contemporaries
New York City
Circa 1830’s

A restrained and simplified fall front desk with a command of proportion that is combined with its relatively small scale creating an effect of grandeur typical of the fine works of Duncan Phyfe furniture.

The aesthetic of the Restauration style in France was popularized in the United States and began to influence American furniture in the late 1820’s and became dominant threw 1833-42. Within this period Duncan Phyfe’s shop was the most advanced and sophisticated as can be seen in this desk’s fine composition.
