MINIATURE EMPIRE CHEST
New York – Circa 1830 – 1840
This miniature case piece was made in the last phase of the Americian Classical Period – Pillar and Scroll. A mahogany miniature chest was possibly a salesman sample – an example of what could be expected by a customer of a full size piece.
This estate found miniature having no restorations features a mahogany top, sides and veneer drawer fronts. The slightly overhanging rectangular top is above a large top drawer flanked with string inlay. It is supported by scroll shaped pillars terminating downward to flank two inset lower drawers. The choice mahogany grain drawer fronts retain their original gilt knobs. The chest is supported on c-scroll feet. A fine miniature that is enhanced by a old if not original finish.
