HUDSON RIVER VALLEY KAS

Among the early eighteenth century furniture forms, the Kas was always given a prominent place in colonial interiors and thus required a facade in keeping with its imposing nature. The absence of closets in the interior architecture of America’s early homes was fulfilled by the imposing free-standing storage piece known as a Kas. As shown, within this very fine example, the best New York Kas’s were made to have an architectural appearance. The old refinished surface now has a mellowed complexion which serves the Kas’s essential character. A deeply molded cornice flares out above the cupboard section (removable as a transportation convenience) that rests on a base housing drawers. All the above stand on very generous original bun feet which supports this grand structure, completing its Hudson River Valley character.

Almost every Hudson River household during the Colonial Period must have had one of theses great wardrobes or cupboards. This Important Example has always been in the VanDerVeer Family and was purchased from a direct descendant from Queens New York.
