Harry Tyler, who lived in Butterville, Jefferson County, N.Y. between 1834 and 1856, was a prolific weaver. He was a man of high principles, very painstaking in all his work and accurate to the last degree. He Invented his looms and made every part of them himself. These pieces were complicated and intricate. Harry also drew all his designs for the patterns.

“Persons wishing the above work may be assured that all work entrusted to my care, shall be done as well, if not better, than by any other weaver in the state.”

Harry Tyler is believed to have 90 coverlets attributed to him. Although he was born in the Conn., his initial distinctive corner block was the English Lion.

A folktale, legend or romance, attached to the Tyler Coverlet Corner Blocks. “The English bride always desired a lion on her coverlet, but if she were partly persuaded to become an American, she had the lion and some stars, and when fully decided to become a full-fledged American, she had only the American emblem, the eagle.”
