Previously sold to a collector, we are pleased to offer once again this Scarce Marble-Top Urn Table. Upon first observing this Fine Quality Table, special attention should be given towards its precisely balanced cabinetry. The original multi-grained black marble (Egyptian marble) top completes the stand’s extraordinary beauty as it rests upon its mahogany base.
This Scare form, speaks well for the genius of its design. Its elegant appearance seems to be achieved through the severe geometry of simple lines. It is alive with movement created by the flowing lines of its base construction. The center support has visually upwards energy which is rigorously controlled by the cabinet makers excellent choice of rich mahogany surfaces. The pedestal base support is a exuberance of curves, scrolled supports and whimsical scrolled feet.
Overall, this Scarce Classical Marble-Top Urn Table expresses a radiant elegant appearance which is reflected by the hand of a Masterful New York Cabinetmaker.
Joseph Meeks and Sons of New York City (1797-1868) was one of the most important cabinetmaking firms in disseminating the late Classical Period in America. In 1833, Endicott and Semett printed a handsome colored advertisement for the firm which showed forty-one pieces of furniture. This advertisement featuring the furniture of Joseph Meeks and Sons is the first American publication illustrating complete furniture design. The furniture pictured is all in the late Classical Period with projecting columns in the French manner and an extraordinary use of “S” and “C” scrolls in all forms.
