SHERATON INLAID CHEST
NEW HAMPSHIRE
Circa 1800 – 1815
This straight-front chest of drawers has a rectangular top and sides of birch. The four cock beaded drawers are all of a size each veneered with birdseye maple fronts bordered by crossbanded mahogany. Each square supporting leg which frames the case has reeding that terminates to turned tapering feet. The legs on its sides have double reeding. The cabinet shop has applied this form of decoration creating a vertical proportion to the chest. A mahogany scrolled apron is centered with a rectangular drop panel conforming to the drawers. This rural NH chest has combined design with richly colored woods satisfying the fashionable demand of the Sheration Period.
In this rural interpretation of a sophisticated furniture form, veneers and inlays have been successfully juxtaposed.
