BIOGRAPHY for Edwin, Jr. Lamasure 1867 – 1916

Birth 1867 (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania)
Death 1916 (Bluemont, Virginia)
Lived/Active – Virginia/District Of Columbia

The following biography is based on information from the artist’s website, www.lamasure.com as suggested by Michael Ewing:

The Old Santa Fe Trail was a wagon road, running from Kansas City and Independence westward and southward to Old City of Santa Fe, in the days before railroads had been built. The commerce in the southwest passed in wagon caravans over the old trail, with Santa Fe as the depot and chief business city.

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania of French and Scotch parentage, Edwin Lamasure learned in his youth the engraver’s art and for some years was employed at the National Bureau of Engraving and Printing in Washington. His work there was the best possible preparation for the career he followed later, for it taught him accuracy and carefulness of drawing. As a young man he became a noted landscapist, self taught, primarily using watercolors and working from a studio in Washington DC. There he was active in art clubs and exhibited regularly at the Veerhoff Gallery and with the Washington Water Color Society.
